Steve Jobs died of complications from pancreatic cancer on Oct. 5. He had first been diagnosed with the condition in 2004. A small private funeral for Jobs was held on Oct. 7.
Invitees to the service were asked to respond to the Emerson Collective, which is a philanthropic organization established by Laurene Powell Jobs, Jobs' wife.
Later in the day, and in the wake of the news, California governor Jerry Brown Tweeted that Oct. 16 will be Steve Jobs day in California. It was unclear if Brown was going to attempt to make Oct. 16 Steve Jobs day on an annual basis.
The event, and the honor, will come just two days after the release of Apple's latest iPhone, the iPhone 4S, which launched on Oct. 14 to long lines, and for the first time in the U.S., multiple carriers (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon).
Jobs' death ironically came the day after the introduction of the device, which came on Oct. 4, and was hosted by new CEO Tim Cook. Just a few weeks before his death, Jobs stepped down as CEO, and Cook was anointed, at Jobs' recommendation, as the new CEO.
Jobs was then appointed Chairman of the Board, and Cook was given a seat on the board, as well. Jobs' first official biography arrives on Oct. 24.
